Music Ministries at NLR First United Methodist Church are a caring family
of committed Christians who are dedicated to their calling:
ministering to people through the medium of music.
The Music Ministry family is a joyful family,
a fun-loving family, and a praying family.
The Chancel Choir is made up of men and women of various ages ranging from 20 something to 80-something! Be it not age, what everyone has in common is a love of singing and a place to serve God. The choir is a small group, as would be a Sunday School class or a Bible study. We pray for each other, support each other and lift each other up. A very dedicated group of individuals (and each and every one is very “individual”!), they are unique in every way, as are the nature of their responsibilities.
They meet at 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday (with the exception of one month in the summer) and present an anthem every Sunday of the year. In addition, the choir presents music for many special services during the year, especially at Easter and Christmas. And as hard as they work, they play just as hard! They are never without a good laugh or a good cry! The invitation is always open to join the choir. Some read music, some do not. Some have solo voices, many do not. A simple desire to serve and sing is all that is needed!
Two children's choirs offer music education and fun. They learn age-appropriate music and perform occasionally during worship and special events.
The Cherub Choir, for ages 3 through 2nd grade, meets at 6 p.m. each Wednesday in the church parlor. They combine with children who practice during the Pre-School
Sunday School Class to perform.
The Angel Choir for 3rd through 5th graders, meets at 6 p.m. each Wednesday upstairs in the Coral Reef music room.
The Ensemble is a singing group of a more specialized nature. Each week at 5:45 p.m. the ensemble meets in the choir room to prepare music for worship in and outside the church. The group is made up of both men and women. The music selection is more gospel in nature and is open to other interested singers.
Faith Ringers Handbell Choir
The Faith Ringers Handbell Choir meets each Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Although most anyone could be trained on bells, it does take strong wrists, good rhythm and good hand/eye coordination. Both male and female ringers are encouraged to participate, and although reading skills would be a plus, not all ringers start out as music readers. The Faith Ringers participate in worship and also participate in the Annual State Handbell Festival each year. Another small group of individuals who care for each other through prayer and study, they too are dedicated to the task of ringing and serving God in a meaningful way.
WayPoint Praise Group
For a more contemporary flavor, we offer participation in the WayPoint Praise Group. These singers and players prepare music for the 9 a.m. WayPoint Service, a more relaxed atmosphere for worshipers who like to wear jeans and sip coffee during worship. Another unique aspect of WayPoint is the fact that communion is served each and every Sunday, in lieu of monthly. WayPoint has its own space which doubles as the Fellowship Hall.
Each musical group is led by trained, capable directors/leaders who specialize in that particular aspect of worship. Fortunately, North Little Rock is rich in musical tradition and is proud to continue that tradition!
If your desire is to serve God through music, your talents are welcome, regardless of your age or level of ability. The graded music program includes choral choirs, handbell choirs, and dramatic opportunities. If you are an instrumentalist, your talent can be especially useful!
